War Music and Tourism

← Back to On Peace

There are various instances of classical music being part of war-related tourism phenomena.

Koseki Yuji

Koseki wrote the ballad Bells of Nagasaki – see Contemplating Defeat. There is the Koseki Yuji Memorial Hall in his native Fukushima city. Koseki was also the model for the hero of the NHK Morning Drama Yell in 2020, which was supposed to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (Koseki also wrote the Olympic March – see Marches). Despite Covid-19 restrictions, tourist numbers to the Memorial Hall rose from around 13,174 in 2018 to 65,667 during 2020, the year of the drama, in the classic pattern of a contents tourism boom.

We have mentioned briefly this contents tourism related to Koseki in Chapter 15 of War as Entertainment and Contents Tourism in Japan.
